Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Markham

Usually between ages 17 and 25

A wisdom tooth extraction, often called wisdom teeth removal surgery, is a dental procedure to take out a tooth from your third set of molars, known as your “wisdom teeth”. The procedure is typically used when a tooth becomes impacted.

Not everyone has wisdom teeth, but most people do, and they typically grow between the ages of 17 and 25. They often become impacted, which means there isn’t enough room for them to come through the gum. Having the tooth removed protects the neighbouring teeth.

Why Wisdom Teeth Are Removed

If an examination shows that your wisdom teeth are impacted or might cause problems in the future, your dentist will recommend wisdom tooth removal surgery.

Other reasons for wisdom teeth extraction include teeth that:

  • Grow angled toward the next tooth (the second molar).
  • Grow angled toward the back of the mouth.
  • Harm the neighbouring teeth.

Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

For the first 24 hours after surgery

  • Do not use a straw or rinse your mouth out too quickly.
  • Avoid mouthwash that contains alcohol, and avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth right next to the extraction site. There may be some pain, bleeding and swelling for a few days after the surgery, and you may find it hard to speak at first.

Relief

  • After surgery, take a week off from physically demanding activities. High blood pressure can make the wound bleed or reopen.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours after surgery, especially if you’re taking prescription painkillers.
  • Avoid smoking, as it restricts blood vessels and can cause infections that slow down healing.
  • To stop bleeding, try placing a moistened tea bag over the site for half an hour.

What to eat and drink

  • Eat only soft foods, such as dairy products, for the first twenty-four hours after your procedure. Over the following day or two, you can move on to semi-soft foods like eggs, soft bread and oatmeal.
  • Stay away from anything hot, acidic, chewy or crunchy until you’ve recovered.
